The late Gov. Bill Clements knew a lot about the oil business and politics. He also knew what made a fine Texas ranch.

Called “the father of the modern-day Texas Republican Party,” Clements served two terms as governor beginning in 1979. Before entering politics, Clements founded his own international drilling company and was an expert at offshore drilling.

In 1984, Clements and his wife, Rita, built an impressive 3,840-square-foot stone home on 20 acres just east of Dallas near Forney. The three-story home with five stone fireplaces and three grand porches entertained many state leaders and national Republicans who dropped in on the governor seeking his advice.
