Walker Stovall’s father died a decade ago. After driving 10,000 miles delivering supplies to American troops in Iraq, the truck the Army National Guardsman drove hit a roadside bomb. Walter wears his dad’s hat and dog tag and was thrilled last year when Carry the Load marchers asked him to be the flag bearer as they passed through Memphis, TN.

Live to Give: Boots to Heels - Success in Civilian Life

Diana Cuesta felt like she just kept failing until she found the Boots to Heels program. A former Air Force transportation specialist, Cuesta was homeless and fighting to keep custody of her two boys when she attended her first seminar to help women veterans adapt to the civilian workplace. From the first meeting, Cuesta knew the program, created by Attitudes & Attire, would be helpful. She just didn’t know it would change her life.

Live to Give: Little Stewpot Stewards - Caring for the Homeless

For his 6th birthday, April Gorman’s son surprised her when, in place of toys and games, he asked for socks to help homeless people he had seen on Dallas streets. When he gave out the socks one morning at The Stewpot, those who received them showered smiles on the young Gorman. That inspired him and his mother to begin raising money to buy more clothing for the needy.

Live to Give: Art Station Fort Worth – Helping to Heal and Grow {Video}

It’s not about creating a better picture. It’s about making a better life.

Angry outbursts, little communication and isolating behavior led one young boy to Art Station Fort Worth, where licensed therapists encouraged him to create a 3-D model of his ideal city. The result was a city with no school and a large jail to lock up the bad guys. Through support and encouragement, therapists learned that the boy was being bullied and felt powerless to make it stop. They worked with him to develop ways to stand up for himself, ask for help and begin making productive friendships.

Live to Give: Road to Recovery - A Driving Force for Cancer Patients

For more than two decades, Debbie Knight has been a driving force for people fighting cancer.

After her husband was diagnosed with cancer in 1994, she was inspired by a news feature about Road To Recovery. The service by the American Cancer Society provides transportation to and from treatment for cancer patients who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Patients often need assistance with travel to and from chemotherapy, radiation and other medical appointments. The organization hit home for the Knights, and she has been involved ever since.

Live to Give: CERT - Training for the Front Lines

When disaster strikes, communities must be ready to respond. Doug Frazier makes sure there are people in place who know how to handle the unthinkable. An active member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) since its first Dallas class in 2007, Frazier has served as an instructor for five years. He guides volunteers through 20 hours of training, including disaster preparedness, fire safety, search and rescue and medical operations.

“I’ve long believed that people are not generally prepared to deal with an emergency,” Frazier says. “I got into teaching because there was a void that I felt like I needed to fill.”
