Highlander Band Takes Its Talent to the State Competition

The Highland Band is one of the biggest and best in the group’s history. They travel to the state UIL competition later this month to test their skills.
The Highlander Band, which entertains both in the stands and on the field during football games at the Highland Park High School stadium, may be the largest in the band’s storied history.
This month, it may also prove to be one of the best when it competes in the state UIL competition on Oct. 26.
Reagan Brumley, the band’s director for the last two years, said the 140-member band has about 20 members more this year than it did when he arrived at the high school. And he expects the numbers may hit 160 next year. “We are really excited. The kids are really getting into it,” Brumley said.
He attributes the growth to the work he and his fellow band directors, Corey Parks, associate director of bands, and Lara Whitehouse, assistant band director, do at the middle-school level. The sixth- through eighth-graders “know all of us,” Brumley said.
As a result, more of the eighth graders are staying with the band as they move to high school.
The halftime shows have been well received with the band performing well-known, southern music like tunes from Gone With the Wind and Shenandoah, which have garnered “really nice responses from the football crowd,” he said.
Two years ago the band made it to the finals of the regional band competitions. Brumley said, “I think we are stronger this year.”
